Shadox,

Being a Gen Y myself, and hearing from others on the piece, advice dished out does not seem to reflect reality on the ground. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Thanks for mentioning my post. I would also like to point out that my limited experience in managing Gen Y reports has been completely different from those discussed in the Fortune article. I truly found that article to be both laughable and bizzare - upside down advice.

Gaurav,

I think these things tend to oscillate between two extremes. Perhaps the previous generation reacted against their tough-love upbringings and wanted something different for their children. That realization might have resulted in an over-reaction. But it would be interesting to see if the current child-bearing generation will try something different. Or perhaps the conversation will metamorphose into something else altogether? I'm not sure.

Thanks Shaun. I hope our generation will overcome some aspects of our upbringing, and see through some of the marketing gimmicks. Although I'm sure ingenius marketers will come up with something else - selling authenticity and transparency perhaps? I'm too cynical ...

Dana,

Found this interesting - especially the bit about school. I don't know how this trend of celebrating mediocrity really started, or took hold, but it seems to be everywhere. And somehow, I feel that getting kids hooked onto this instant gratification theme has only made it worse.

Kids need to be taught that failure is real - and happens more often than you might think (I know my teachers were really tough in this matter too, but they were fair). If schools aren't going to instill atleast a little competitiveness, then when will kids learn the lesson?

So true. As someone once said, pride must be earned. Self-esteem is worthless when it ignores the blemishes (such as a low grade) that we do have. Great article as usual.
